Brandy Milk Punch
intro
A velvety, spice-kissed creamy brandy cocktail, this beloved New Orleans brunch staple is ideal for cozy cold-weather holiday sipping.
Ingredients
Steps
Place four 8-oz (240 ml) coupe or old-fashioned glasses in the freezer to chill for 3 full minutes before preparing the drink; this prevents fast dilution and keeps the punch cold longer. Skip sugared rims for this classic preparation.
Set a 750 ml (25 oz) cocktail shaker on your work surface, and add the measured base ingredients: 180 ml brandy, 240 ml cold whole milk, 120 ml cold heavy whipping cream, 25 g (2 tbsp) powdered sugar, and 5 ml (1 tsp) pure vanilla extract. Stir the mixture slowly with a long bar spoon for 15 seconds until the powdered sugar fully dissolves, with no visible white lumps remaining.
Add 3 cups (375 g) of large ice cubes to the shaker, press the shaker lid on tightly to create a watertight seal, and shake vigorously up and down for 20 full seconds. Stop shaking once the exterior of the shaker feels frosty and ice-cold to the touch, indicating the punch has chilled to 4°C (39°F).
Retrieve the pre-chilled glasses from the freezer, hold a fine-mesh cocktail strainer over the opening of the first glass, and pour the shaken punch evenly across all four glasses, leaving 1.25 cm (1/2 inch) of empty headspace at the top of each glass to prevent spills. Discard the slushy melted ice remaining in the bottom of the shaker.
Grate whole nutmeg over each glass to add a light, even dusting (approximately 0.25 g / 1/16 tsp per glass) across the entire surface of the punch. Avoid pre-ground nutmeg, as it lacks the bright, warm aromatic notes of freshly grated spice. Add one single large ice cube to each glass only if you prefer a slightly more diluted, less thick serve.
Serve the punch immediately, within 2 minutes of pouring, to preserve its velvety texture and ideal cold temperature. If making ahead, store the unshaken base (without ice) in a sealed airtight container in the fridge for up to 12 hours, shaking fresh with ice right before serving.
Tips
2.Always dissolve powdered sugar in the liquid base before adding ice to the shaker; shaking undissolved sugar with ice will leave grainy, gritty white residue at the bottom of your finished glasses.
3.For a cozy warm winter variation, heat the milk and cream to 60°C (140°F) over low stovetop heat (do not boil, as high heat will curdle the dairy) before stirring in brandy, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg, skipping the ice entirely for a toddy-style drink.

OMG this is SO good! I made this for my Sunday brunch crew last weekend and everyone was begging for the recipe. So creamy, not too strong, perfect balance of sweet and brandy kick. Will be making this for every holiday brunch from now on!
Super easy to throw together for a last minute New Year’s Eve pre-game! I used a little extra vanilla extract because I love that flavor, and it turned out chef’s kiss. Only took me 4 minutes flat to make two servings.
I made a non-alcoholic version for the kids with extra milk, a splash of vanilla, and a little nutmeg on top and they went crazy for it! My husband and I had the regular brandy version after they went to bed and it was the perfect nightcap. 10/10 for the whole family.
Has anyone tried this with a dark rum swap instead of brandy? I have a ton of dark rum left over from my holiday tiki party and don’t want to run to the store just for brandy.
Game changer! I was so tired of the same old mimosas at our monthly potluck, so I brought a big batch of this and people were going back for thirds. Pro tip: make it the night before and let it chill in the fridge, it tastes even better cold!
First time making any kind of milk punch and this was foolproof! I was worried I’d mess it up for my roommate’s birthday pregame, but it came out perfect even with my cheap grocery store brandy. So impressed.
My wife and I have been making milk punch every Christmas Eve for 40 years, and this recipe is dead on for the classic version we grew up with. The nutmeg on top is non-negotiable, don’t skip it folks!
Wait, has anyone tried making this with oat milk instead of regular whole milk? I’m lactose intolerant but have been craving this cocktail ever since I saw it pop up on my feed. Don’t want to waste good brandy on a curdled mess!
Made this for my girlfriend’s birthday brunch and she said it’s better than the version they serve at our favorite fancy brunch spot downtown. Win for the home cook! I added a little cinnamon stick garnish for extra flair.
Wait, how long does this stay good in the fridge? I want to prep a batch on Sunday to have for evening treats after work all week, but don’t know if it will hold up that long.
Grew up drinking this at my grandma’s house on Christmas morning, and this recipe tastes exactly like hers. The right amount of cream, not too sweet, perfect warm spice from the nutmeg. Absolute comfort in a glass.
Made this for our first holiday party as a married couple and got so many compliments! Multiple guests asked for the recipe before they left, which made me feel like a total pro bartender. So easy even a cooking newbie like me can nail it.
This is good, but I added an extra tablespoon of simple syrup because I like my cocktails on the sweeter side, and it was perfect for me. Next time I might even add a dollop of whipped cream on top for extra decadence.
Brought a thermos of this up to the ski lodge last weekend and it was the perfect cold but cozy pick me up between runs. Everyone in our group was passing the thermos around and asking where I got the recipe. Will be a ski trip staple from now on!
Help! I accidentally added too much brandy when I was mixing up a batch for my book club tonight. Is there a way to fix it without starting all the way over?
