Hurricane
intro
Iconic fruity, rum-forward New Orleans Creole cocktail with bright citrus and sweet passion fruit notes, served icy cold over crushed ice for a bold, refreshing summer sip.
Ingredients
Steps
Chill serving glasses
Place 4 tall 16-oz (475 ml) hurricane glasses in the freezer for 8 minutes to chill completely while you prep the cocktail mix; no heat is required for this recipe. Remove glasses right before pouring to keep drinks cold longer.
Measure all ingredients
Use a jigger or liquid measuring cup to portion out 240 ml light rum, 120 ml dark rum, 180 ml passion fruit syrup, 120 ml fresh orange juice, 60 ml fresh lime juice, and 30 ml grenadine into separate small prep cups to avoid measurement errors during mixing.
Shake the cocktail base
Fill a large 1.5 L (50 oz) cocktail shaker half-full with crushed ice (about 2 cups). Pour all measured liquid ingredients into the shaker, seal the lid tightly, and shake vigorously for 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels frosty to the touch, reaching roughly 4°C (40°F) to ensure proper chilling.
Prep glasses with ice
Remove the chilled hurricane glasses from the freezer, and fill each glass to ½ inch below the rim with fresh crushed ice (about 1 cup per glass, 4 cups total), packing the ice lightly to create a cold, slushy base for the cocktail.
Strain and pour cocktails
Remove the lid from the cocktail shaker, fit a Hawthorne strainer over the top, and pour the shaken deep red cocktail mix evenly between the 4 ice-filled glasses, leaving ¼ inch of headspace at the top of each glass to avoid spills when adding garnishes.
Garnish and serve immediately
Slip one thin orange slice onto the rim of each glass, drop 2 maraschino cherries into each drink, and add a long paper straw if desired. Serve immediately while the drink is ice-cold, with no additional resting time to prevent ice melt from diluting the flavor.
Tips
2.Crushed ice is required for the classic slushy texture; if you only have cubed ice, pulse cubes in a blender for 10 seconds on low speed to make coarse crushed ice, as whole cubes dilute the drink too slowly and alter the traditional mouthfeel.
3.Do not let the shaken cocktail sit before pouring—serve immediately to avoid over-dilution from melted ice, which will make the drink taste watery and weak.

OMG this is SO good! I made a batch for my Mardi Gras potluck last weekend and every single person asked for the recipe. Tastes exactly like the ones I had on Bourbon Street a few years back, no weird artificial syrup aftertaste at all. So easy to throw together too, I was shocked it only took 10 minutes!
Solid hurricane recipe! I mixed this up for my roommate’s birthday pregame last night, everyone was raving. I added a tiny extra splash of dark rum because I like my drinks a little stronger, but the base ratio is chef’s kiss. Total game changer for at-home happy hours, I’ll never buy pre-made mix again.
I was so intimidated to make a classic NOLA cocktail at home but this was genuinely so easy! My husband and I made these for our at-home date night on Friday and we both agreed they’re better than most we’ve ordered at restaurants. We even had the leftover mixed batch over crushed ice the next day, still totally delicious.
Made a big pitcher of these for my backyard cookout over the weekend and they were gone in 20 minutes flat! Even my sister who says she “hates sweet cocktails” had two full glasses. The orange slice and maraschino cherry garnish really makes it feel fancy even though it takes no time to put together.
As someone who lived in New Orleans for 6 years, I can confirm this is the real deal! No weird neon fake slushie mix garbage, this is exactly what they serve at the classic neighborhood spots off the main Bourbon Street drag. I’ve been searching for a reliable at-home recipe for years and this is it, no notes.
Taste was great! My only note is that I found it a little sweeter than I prefer, so next time I’ll cut the passion fruit syrup with a little extra fresh lime juice to balance it out. Super easy to make though, perfect for last minute get togethers with friends.
Made these for my girls’ night in last night and we all felt like we were on a French Quarter vacation! We paired them with frozen beignets (don’t judge, they were so good) and it was the perfect little theme night. 10/10 will be making these all summer long for patio hangs with friends.
