intro

A thick, creamy, macro-balanced protein shake ideal for post-workout recovery or fast on-the-go fuel, with no refined sugar and 30g of protein per serving.

Ingredients

Vanilla whey protein concentrate 60 grams (2 standard scoops)
Unsweetened plain almond milk 360 ml (1.5 cups)
Non-fat plain Greek yogurt 150 grams (2/3 cup)
Frozen ripe banana (peeled, pre-sliced) 118 grams (1 medium)
No-added-sugar creamy peanut butter 32 grams (2 tablespoons)
Chia seeds 15 grams (1 tablespoon)
Ground cinnamon 0.5 grams (1/4 teaspoon)
Ice cubes 120 grams (4 large cubes)

Steps

1

Gather and prep ingredients

First, set out all pre-measured ingredients: confirm your frozen banana slices are fully solid (frozen for at least 4 hours prior), and arrange 60g vanilla whey protein, 150g non-fat Greek yogurt, 360ml unsweetened almond milk, 32g no-added-sugar peanut butter, 15g chia seeds, 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, and 120g ice cubes within reach. Ensure your countertop blender is plugged in and its carafe is clean and completely dry.

Step 1
step1:Gather and prep ingredients
2

Add liquid base first

Pour the full 360ml of cold, refrigerated unsweetened almond milk into the bottom of the blender carafe first. Adding liquid before any thick or dry ingredients prevents protein powder and dense add-ins from getting trapped under the blender blades, which causes lumpy, unevenly blended shakes. Do not add thick or frozen ingredients before the liquid.

Step 2
step2:Add liquid base first
3

Layer soft, dry ingredients

Next, add the 150g non-fat plain Greek yogurt, 32g no-added-sugar peanut butter, 15g chia seeds, and 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon on top of the almond milk. Scoop the full 60g of vanilla whey protein powder directly into the center of the liquid pool to avoid powder sticking to the dry upper sides of the carafe, which causes unblended dry clumps.

Step 3
step3:Layer soft, dry ingredients
4

Top with frozen ingredients

Place all 118g of frozen pre-sliced banana and 120g of large ice cubes on the very top of the ingredient stack. The weight of the frozen ingredients will gently push softer ingredients down toward the spinning blades as the blender runs, creating a smoother, more even texture without requiring long over-blending.

Step 4
step4:Top with frozen ingredients
5

Blend in staged intervals

Secure the blender lid tightly, holding it down with a folded cotton kitchen towel to prevent cold shake splatters. Run the blender on low speed for 10 seconds to initially break up ice and banana chunks, then increase to medium-high speed for 30 seconds. Stop the blender, scrape down the sides of the carafe with a rubber spatula to dislodge any stuck protein powder, then blend for another 20 seconds on high speed until completely smooth, with no visible lumps or ice chunks.

Step 5
step5:Blend in staged intervals
6

Check consistency and serve

Remove the blender lid, and dip a metal spoon into the shake to check thickness: it should coat the back of the spoon evenly without running off too quickly. If too thick, stir in 30ml extra cold almond milk and blend for 5 seconds; if too thin, add 1 extra large ice cube and blend for 5 seconds. Pour immediately into two tall 16-oz glasses, and serve cold, as the shake will thicken and separate if left to sit for more than 10 minutes.

Step 6
step6:Check consistency and serve

Tips

1.Always add liquid ingredients to the blender first, as placing protein powder directly under frozen or thick ingredients will cause it to stick to the blade housing and create grainy, unblended lumps.
2.Avoid over-blending for more than 1 minute total, as excessive blending breaks down whey protein and chia seeds, leading to a thin, watery texture instead of the desired thick, creamy consistency.
3.For a vegan version, swap whey protein for vanilla pea protein, replace Greek yogurt with unsweetened coconut yogurt, and use oat milk for an equally creamy, plant-based result.

Protein Shake:Frequently Asked Questions

1.Can I modify this recipe to be vegan or dairy-free?
Absolutely! Swap the vanilla whey protein concentrate for a vanilla pea-and-rice plant-based protein blend (it has the creamiest, least chalky texture), trade the Greek yogurt for unsweetened plain coconut yogurt, and confirm your peanut butter has no hidden dairy additives. You’ll still get roughly 28g of protein per serving with the same rich, smooth mouthfeel.
2.My shake came out too thin—what went wrong, and how do I fix it?
This almost always traces to a not-fully-frozen banana or pouring in too much almond milk at the start. Fix it fast by tossing in a handful of ice, 2 extra frozen banana slices, or an extra spoonful of frozen Greek yogurt. For next time, add almond milk a quarter cup at a time, blending as you go, to hit your ideal thick, spoonable consistency.
3.How far in advance can I prep this shake for busy on-the-go mornings?
This shake stays fresh and smooth for up to 24 hours when stored in a sealed, airtight mason jar or shaker bottle in the fridge. Give it a quick 10-second shake before drinking if any minor separation occurs. I don’t recommend freezing it, though—thawing disrupts the creamy texture and makes the peanut butter turn unpleasantly grainy and separated.
4.I don’t have peanut butter on hand—what are good, macro-friendly swaps?
Swap the no-added-sugar peanut butter for equal parts no-added-sugar almond butter, sunflower seed butter, or cashew butter for a milder, sweeter flavor. If you’re cutting extra fat, you can skip the nut butter entirely and add a half-scoop of extra vanilla protein, though you’ll lose a bit of that rich, indulgent mouthfeel that makes the shake feel like a treat.
5.Do I need to add extra ingredients to make this work for post-workout recovery?
Nope, this shake is perfectly balanced for post-workout recovery as written! The 30g of mixed fast- and slow-digesting protein from whey and Greek yogurt supports muscle repair, the frozen banana replenishes spent glycogen stores with quick carbs, and the small hit of peanut butter fat keeps you full without slowing nutrient delivery too much for fast recovery.
6.Why do you recommend frozen pre-sliced banana instead of fresh banana and ice?
Frozen pre-sliced ripe banana creates that luxe, thick milkshake-like texture without watering down the shake the way plain ice does as it melts. A heavily spotted, ripe frozen banana also adds natural, caramel-like sweetness, so you don’t need any refined sugar to make the shake taste great, keeping your macro counts clean and well balanced.

OMG this vanilla protein shake is a total game changer for my post-workout rush! I throw in a handful of frozen spinach sometimes and you can’t even taste it, my 7 year old begs for it every morning before school. SO creamy, no weird chalky aftertaste like most protein shake recipes I’ve tried. 10/10

Wait frozen spinach hack is genius! I’ve been adding frozen cauliflower but spinach sounds way easier, does it change the color at all?

So glad you and your kid love it, Mia! The frozen veggie add-ins are such a great way to sneak in extra nutrients without ruining that creamy vanilla flavor—we love tossing in a little frozen mango sometimes too for a tropical twist!

Perfect for my 5 minute morning meal prep! I make three of these on Sunday night for me and my two teens to grab on the way to school and practice, it holds up great in the fridge for a couple days. Only note is I used oat milk instead of almond because that’s what we had, still came out amazing.

Thanks for sharing your swap, Rob! Oat milk adds such a nice extra creaminess, that’s one of our go-to non-dairy picks too. So stoked this fits into your busy family schedule!

Literally saved my breakfast routine. I don’t have time to cook between 8am lectures and gym sessions, this takes 2 minutes to throw together in my dorm blender and keeps me full until lunch. Way cheaper than buying those $8 protein shakes from the campus coffee shop too!

I was so skeptical because my kids turn their nose up at every “healthy” thing I make, but they went crazy for this! I topped theirs with a little whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles and they thought it was a milkshake. Will absolutely be adding this to our weekly rotation.

The sprinkles trick is genius! I make this for my grandkids when they visit on weekends, I’m gonna steal that for next time, they’ll lose their minds.

Love the sprinkles hack, Sarah! We’re all about making nutritious food feel fun for kids (and let’s be real, for adults too— I add sprinkles to mine all the time 😂)

Solid protein shake, great macros for post-lift. I added a tablespoon of peanut butter and a dash of cinnamon to mine, hit every single craving I had after deadlift day. Only thing is I wish it was a little thicker? Next time I’ll add more ice I guess.

Try adding a quarter of a frozen avocado instead of extra ice! Makes it super thick without watering it down when the ice melts, game changer.

I’ve tried probably a hundred vanilla protein shake recipes over the years and this is easily top 3. The vanilla extract plus a tiny bit of Greek yogurt is what makes it so creamy, no chalky protein powder taste at all. Brought a batch to my weekend trail run group and everyone asked for the recipe!

Made this for my book club potluck last week as a light drink option alongside all the cookies and brownies, and people were raving! A couple people asked if I put ice cream in it because it was so rich and creamy, they couldn’t believe it was high protein. 10/10, will make again.

Oh serving this at book club is such a good idea! I’ve only made it for breakfast, I’m gonna make a big batch for our next soccer team snack day, the parents will love it too.

We love hearing that it was a potluck hit, Liz! It’s such a versatile option—great for breakfast, post-workout, or even a lighter sweet treat at gatherings. So glad your book club enjoyed it!

Bro this shake is insane. I used vanilla whey protein, added a frozen banana, and it tasted exactly like the vanilla milkshakes I used to get after little league games as a kid. No grit, no weird artificial aftertaste, 10/10 for gains and for flavor.

Love that frozen banana add-in, Jake! It adds such a perfect natural sweetness and creaminess, that’s one of our all-time favorite mix-ins too. Cheers to gains and great flavor!

Staple for my weekly meal prep! I portion out the protein powder, vanilla, and dry ingredients into little mason jars on Sunday so all I have to do in the morning is dump it in the blender with milk and ice, takes literally 2 minutes. Stays frothy and creamy even when I drink it on my commute. Obsessed.

Great easy recipe! I made this for myself after my morning walks, it’s gentle on my stomach which I love because a lot of protein shakes upset my digestion. I swapped the regular milk for lactose-free whole milk and it came out perfect.

So glad you mentioned it being easy on the stomach! My youngest has a sensitive tummy and I’ve been looking for protein drinks that don’t upset her, I’m gonna try your lactose-free milk swap for her!
