intro

A bright, perfectly balanced ice-cold blend of brisk sweet black tea and tart fresh lemonade, the iconic thirst-quenching Southern summer sipper.

Ingredients

Orange pekoe black tea bags 4 bags (8g total tea)
Granulated white sugar 3/4 cup (150g)
Fresh lemons 6 medium (yields 3/4 cup / 180ml juice, plus garnish slices)
Filtered water 3.5 cups (840ml), divided
Baking soda 1/8 teaspoon (0.5g)
Ice cubes 4 cups (500g)
Fresh mint sprigs (optional) 4 sprigs

Steps

1

Heat base tea water

Place 2 cups (480ml) of filtered water in a small 1-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a full rolling boil (212°F / 100°C), which takes 5-7 minutes, then immediately remove the pan from the stovetop to prevent over-boiled, flat-tasting water.

Step 1
step1:Heat base tea water
2

Steep sweet tea base

Add 1/8 tsp (0.5g) baking soda and 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar to the hot off-heat water, stirring continuously for 30 seconds until sugar is fully dissolved. Submerge all 4 black tea bags in the sweetened water, cover the saucepan, and let steep for exactly 5 minutes on the counter—do not steep longer, as over-steeping creates bitter, astringent tea. Lift tea bags straight out to discard without squeezing them, as squeezing releases bitter tannins.

Step 2
step2:Steep sweet tea base
3

Chill brewed tea base

Pour the hot steeped sweet tea into a 2-quart (2L) clear glass pitcher, then stir in the remaining 1.5 cups (360ml) of cold filtered water to rapidly drop the tea temperature. Leave the pitcher uncovered and place it on a middle shelf in the refrigerator for 45 minutes, until the tea reaches 40°F (4°C) with no residual warmth.

Step 3
step3:Chill brewed tea base
4

Prep fresh lemon juice

While the tea chills, roll each of the 6 medium lemons firmly on the countertop for 10 seconds per lemon to break down internal pulp and maximize juice yield. Cut lemons in half crosswise, and use a handheld citrus juicer to squeeze out 3/4 cup (180ml) of fresh juice, straining out any seeds or thick pulp bits. Cut 8 thin lemon slices from leftover lemon ends for garnish, and set juice and slices aside.

Step 4
step4:Prep fresh lemon juice
5

Combine tea and lemon

Once the sweet tea base is fully chilled, pour the strained fresh lemon juice into the pitcher with the tea. Stir vigorously with a long-handled bar spoon for 20 seconds to fully combine the two liquids. Taste a small sip, and adjust if needed: add 1-2 tbsp (12-25g) extra sugar for more sweetness, or 1 tbsp (15ml) extra lemon juice for brighter tartness.

Step 5
step5:Combine tea and lemon
6

Serve over ice

Fill four 12-oz (350ml) tall highball glasses to the brim with 1 cup (125g) of ice cubes each. Pour the mixed sweet tea lemonade over the ice, filling each glass to 1/2 inch below the rim. Garnish each glass with 2 thin lemon slices and an optional fresh mint sprig, and serve immediately.

Step 6
step6:Serve over ice

Tips

1.Never steep black tea for longer than 5 minutes, and avoid squeezing tea bags when removing them—both practices release bitter tannins that will make your drink taste harsh, even with added sugar.
2.The tiny pinch of baking soda neutralizes tannic acid in the brewed tea, cutting bitter flavor and preventing the cloudy, murky appearance that can develop when iced tea is chilled.
3.For easy make-ahead prep, mix the combined tea and lemonade (without ice) and store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; add ice only right before serving to avoid diluting the drink as ice melts.

Sweet Tea Lemonade:Frequently Asked Questions

1.Why is baking soda listed as an ingredient, and is it really necessary to add it?
Great question! That tiny pinch of baking soda neutralizes bitter tannins in black tea and softens the sharp tartness of fresh lemon juice, keeping your drink smooth rather than astringent, and preventing cloudy separation as it chills. You can skip it in a pinch, but expect a slightly more bitter, sharper-tasting drink that may turn murky after a few hours in the fridge.
2.How far in advance can I make this for a gathering, and how do I keep it from getting watered down?
You can prep this sweet tea lemonade up to 3 days ahead, stored in a sealed pitcher in the fridge—just hold off on adding ice until serving time. For long backyard cookouts, freeze extra strong brewed tea or lemonade into ice cubes to use instead of regular ice, so melting cubes won’t dilute that perfect sweet-tart balance as guests pour refills.

OMG this is the ultimate summer cookout drink! I made a big batch for our neighborhood block party last weekend and every single person asked for the recipe. The balance of sweet tea brightness and tart lemon is *chef’s kiss* – not too cloying like some sweet tea recipes I’ve tried. My kids loved it, even skipped their usual soda refills to grab second cups. Total game changer for potlucks!

Wait did you add any extra mint like the note suggests? I’m making this for our Father’s Day cookout this weekend and wondering if it’s worth the extra step!

So glad this was a block party hit! The fresh mint is totally optional, but it adds a lovely bright note if you have it on hand – no pressure if you don’t, the base recipe is delicious all on its own!

This was so easy to whip up for my weekly meal prep! I keep a big pitcher in the fridge all week for after my evening walks, and it’s way better than the sugary bottled lemonade I used to buy. Only thing I adjusted was cutting the sugar by a 1/4 cup because I prefer less sweet drinks, and it turned out perfect. 10/10 will be making this all summer long.

Love that you adjusted the sugar to fit your taste! That’s the best part about this recipe – it’s super customizable. Thanks for sharing your tweak, I know other readers who prefer less sweet drinks will appreciate that tip!

Just popped my batch in the fridge to chill! The kitchen smelled like pure summer while I was steeping the tea, I can already tell this is gonna be SO good. Planning to pour it over crushed ice with a lemon wedge for my book club meetup tonight. Fingers crossed it’s a hit!

First time making sweet tea anything and I didn’t mess it up! Super easy directions, no fancy ingredients needed. I will say I accidentally steeped the tea bags a little too long so it had a tiny bitter edge, but a little extra lemon juice fixed that right up. Already texted the recipe to my roommates.

Dude I did the same thing my first try! Next time set a timer for the steep time, it makes such a difference. This stuff is insane with a splash of peach vodka too, just saying 😉

Great save with the extra lemon! Pro tip for next time: if you over-steep, a tiny pinch of baking soda can also help cut any bitter notes from the tea, no extra lemon required. So glad you and your roommates are enjoying it!

Made this for a post-hike hang with my trail group last weekend and it was so refreshing after being out in the 90 degree heat! We added some frozen peach slices as ice cubes so it didn’t get watered down as it melted, and it was chef’s kiss. Way better than plain water or sports drinks, honestly.

Oh the frozen peach slice idea is genius! I always hate when my drinks get watery in the summer heat, I’m definitely stealing that trick for my next camping trip

Wait, I grew up in Alabama and have been chasing that perfect Southern sweet tea lemonade taste since I moved up north, and this is IT. Tastes exactly like the stuff my grandma used to make on her front porch in the summer. I got a little emotional taking my first sip, no cap. Absolute perfect recipe, no notes.

I’ve made this recipe four times already this summer and it’s never let me down! I brought it to my church potluck, my kid’s soccer game snack table, a family dinner, and a girls’ night, and every time people beg me for the recipe. It’s so easy even my teen can make it without my help, which is a huge win.

Wow, four batches already – that makes our day! Love that your teen can help make it too, that’s what easy, go-to summer recipes are all about. Thanks so much for coming back to leave such a sweet note!

Wait, can I make this with bottled lemon juice instead of fresh squeezed? I don’t feel like squeezing a million lemons after work lol, I just want a cold drink fast.

I did that last week when I was in a pinch and it was totally fine! Not quite as bright as fresh, but if you’re short on time it 100% works. I added a little extra lemon zest to make up for it!

Great question! Bottled lemon juice works in a pinch if you’re short on time, though fresh squeezed does give a brighter, zippier flavor like BusyMomKelly mentioned. No judgment either way – the goal is a cold, tasty drink with minimal stress!
